Game Review: Rocket League

by Colin McKenzie

Psyonix’s recent best seller Rocket League is a game that came out for Playstation 4 and PC on July 7, 2015. The developers plan to release Rocket League on the Xbox One in February 2016. As a free to play game at the start, Psyonix hoped for that game to grow and  gain popularity. Starting the month of August, due to the number of user downloads, Psyonix shockingly raised the price up to $20.

Rocket League is the sequel to the original game Super Acrobatic Rocket Powered Battle-cars which came out for the Playstation 3 in 2008. Rocket League is often referred to by many as “car soccer.” This is a game where players customize their own vehicles and use them to hit a ball that is much larger than their car into the opponent’s net.

Throughout Rocket League, there is a whole new world of customization available to players. These large amounts of customizations allow players to create their vehicle of choice. This drives players to keep progressing and unlocking more upgrades for their vehicle. Though there have been many updates already, Psyonix hopes to keep adding more content to the game to keep their players pleased.

As the match begins, each team has its members charge the ball in the center of the arena, where the chaos begins. With the start of each match, there is never a dull moment. This fast-paced game keeps players anticipating the ball movement and adjusting their maneuvers to help the ball stay out of their net. Every play in Rocket League is unique; with the new abilities to spin and boost in every direction, players can take lethal shots from all different angles.

Rocket League is filled with a variety of game modes. There is your standard single player and multiplayer with a maximum of four teammates. There is also mutators and different arenas that are all unique is their own way. These mutators came in a recent update and changed the way the game was played. They allowed players to customize all the match settings such as ball size, gravity levels and ball shape.

As with every game release, there are many negatives. Psyonix has been working to update their servers and fix the bugs throughout the game that can lead to a disadvantage for players with an unstable connection. With future updates and maintenance to their servers, Psyonix will fix these bugs allowing players to all have a good time and stable connection for a fair match.

Whether you’re a fan of video games or not, Rocket League is an enjoyable game for anyone. With the fast paced action filled and unique gameplay, there is no doubt this game will continue to grow and please the community. Psyonix will continue updating their game by adding more content for players to unlock as well as new maps for matches to be held on. This game will continue to encourage cooperative gameplay, as well as allow players to create their own unique vehicle designs.
