North Falls in Season Opener to KP

by Andrew Blanchette

Fall in North Attleboro means another highly anticipated football season. The Red Rocketeers’ 2016 season kicked off with Friday night’s game against the King Philip Warriors in a non-league match-up.

In the 2015 season, North Attleboro beat KP, 24-6. However, things proved to not be quite as easy for North this time around. The game was played at North Attleboro’s Community Field at 7 PM and North’s passionate fan base was out in full force.

Both teams started quietly on the offensive side, but at the end of the first quarter, quarterback Chad Peterson hit running back Bobby Mylod for a 15-yard touchdown, giving North a 7-0 lead. KP would answer the score with a 26-yard touchdown pass after a North turnover to tie the game at 7 before halftime.

The Warriors carried the momentum into the second half, completing a 48-yard touchdown on their first drive to go ahead 13-7. Long drives by KP proved to be important, as North Attleboro could not get much going on the offensive side. A 75-yard KP touchdown drive gave the Warriors a 19-7 lead in the fourth quarter.

King Philip’s aggressive gameplan on defense allowed them to sack Peterson four times. North was only able to record five first downs against the tough defense. A late interception by KP ended North’s comeback bid, and they ran out the clock for the 19-7 win.

The loss was certainly a disappointing start to the season, but the Rocketeers will have to pick themselves up and move on.

Starting defensive tackle Tom Kummer said, ‘’We are just trying to move on at this point.’’

There’s still plenty of optimism around this team that finished with just two losses last season. North will also have new opponents, as they joined the Davenport division of the hockomock league and will have to compete with teams such as Stoughton and Foxboro.
