This past Saturday, December 10th, all of the Hockomock track teams piled into Roxbury Community College’s Reggie Lewis Track and Athletic Center for their first dual meet of the winter season. Other leagues who also use this facility are Middlesex, Patriot, Dual County, Atlantic Coast, and Eastern Athletic. Every team in the league competes in their dual meets simultaneously to save space and time because the whole eastern side of Massachusetts uses the facility.
Although all the teams in the Hock were there, North Attleboro only competed against Canton. North Attleboro, having recently switched into the Davenport division, consisting of the smaller schools in the Hockomock league, will be competing against Sharon, Stoughton, Milford, and Foxboro later this season to complete their league schedule.
“I couldn’t wait to get back to Reggie, I’ve been counting down the days since last winter,” said distance runner Megan Leary. “There’s just something about being there, the track feels amazing and you’re surrounded by so many people which creates a positive and fun atmosphere.”
Though the boys’ team was hoping to win 100-0, they only won by the margin of 70-26, which is still nothing to be ashamed of.
With many varsity veterans as well as some newcomers, they were able to secure their lead by placing in various events. The boys’ team took first place in the 55 meter dash, 55 meter hurdles, 600 meters, 4×2 relay, 4×4 relay, shot put, and high jump. They also scored first and second places in the 1000 meters and swept places one through four in the mile.
Sophomore Skyler Poirier ran his first high school track meet this Saturday and came in first place in the 1000. “I didn’t really know what to expect,” he said. “Now that I have my first race over with, I’m excited to try new races and have more chances to succeed in the 1000.”
The girls’ team also left with a big win, beating Canton 86-14. With strong training programs all around, they were able to run, throw and jump their way to success.
“The rush of being at Reggie for the first time in about a year made everyone excited to go out there and give it their all,” said 1000 meter runner Stephanie Hawkins.
The girls took first place in the 300 meters, 4×4, 4×2, and long jump. The North girls also took places one through three in the 55 meter dash, 55 meter hurdles, shot put and high jump, first and second places in the 1000 meters, mile and two mile, and second and third place in the 600.
With a successful first meet under their belt, the team is on their way to a league championship. They will train in the next few weeks to prepare for a dual meet against Sharon Saturday, December 17th, and the upcoming Boston Holiday Challenge taking place the Wednesday of Christmas Vacation.
