Winter Sports Preview

Following a successful 2018 spring season, the winter sports teams hope to continue the winning tradition.

The Boys Basketball team finished with a 9-11 record last season. They lost only two seniors, Captains Chad Peterson and Derek Shanks, but are returning a talented group of players including Captains Nate Gonsalves and Josh Montague. The 2019 basketball class will look to lead their team to the playoffs this winter.

Boys Hockey had a solid season last year, finishing with a 12-8-1 record and reached the playoffs. This team, led by Captains Anthony Zammiello and Brendan McHugh, is hungry for the new season at the New England Sports Village in Attleboro. Senior center Jake Ebert said, “The boys are buzzin to get on the ice.” The team looks to make the playoffs and do damage.

Boys Winter track had an incredible 5-0 year. The team finished second at Hocks, and won division three at the state championship. The team graduated a large and talented senior class, including Matt Tarantino and Jonathan Shultz. Captains Liam Monahan, Skyler Poirier, Liam Conway and the rest of the team are striving for another successful season.

Girls Track and Field finished 5-0 on the season, and won the Hockomock Championship meet. The team was strong at all events and is returning a lot of key athletes this season. Captains Julia Mechlinsky, Celine Ibrahim, and the rest of the team hope to build off of last year’s success this season.

Girls Basketball finished with a 4-16 record in the 2017-2018 season. A young team last year returns with more experience and hopes to have a successful season. The team will be led by Captains Julia Feid and Liz Smahi. Julia Feid said, “The team hopes to make the tournament and compete with some of the best competition in the Hockomock League this season.”

The Gymnastics team finished with a great 6-2 record and finished third at the Hockomock championship. This year they hope to surpass their 2017-2018 achievements. Captains Paige Moore and Kristina Fournier will look to boost the gymnastics team. Paige Moore said, “Our goal is to win Hocks because we have placed second behind Mansfield the past three years.”

The Boys Swimming team finished with a 4-4 record last season and earned 5th place at the Hockomock League Championship meet. Swim Captains John Guiney and Andrew Masek will lead the team thirsty for wins.

The Girls Swimming team finished 3-5 and placed 10th at the Hockomock League Championship meet. Captains Erini Rigas and Mae McLoughlin will lead the squad. Meredith Adler said, “We hope to have a good year and have new faces step up.”

The Winter Cheerleaders had a successful winter last year winning the state championship. Captains Kaleigh Grzenda, Maura Driscoll and the rest of the team have another great season in sight and will be bringing their spirit to the crowds of basketball games.

Wrestling had another great year last season finishing with a 21-3 record and winning their 17th sectional championship. The wrestling crew, led by Captains Matuesz Kudra and Mike Burns, will look to make it 18 this season.

These teams need the support of NAHS fans to create a loud atmosphere at their games and meets. The upcoming 2018-2019 season will be full of memories and team members are excited to get started.
