Who doesn’t want a bestfriend that will show you unconditional love? Dogs can be your best friend and will always be there for you no matter what. Big dogs are fan favorites for most people because they find little dogs as yappy little things. In my opinion, the five best big dogs to ever exist are the following:
- German Shepherd
According to Nylabone, German Shepherds are in the top ten of the best dogs in the world, and are also known for their assisting in police officers, military and guards. German shepherds are lovable animals that are very loyal. If you want to get your first dog, I suggest getting German Shepherds. German Shepherds are very easy to train unlike most dogs. Training will help with their listening, social ability, and just the overall dog itself.
Part of having a good dog is being a responsible pet owner yourself, and in the case of owning a German Shepherd, this means getting them trained. If you don’t get your German Shepherd trained than your dog owning life can be a nightmare. German Shepherds are very energetic, high-maintenance dogs, so if you don’t train them to listen to you don’t walk them, then they will destroy your home. Also, German Shepherds don’t have a long life-span, so if you want your dog to live for more than 10 years I dont think this dog is for you. If your an active person and willing to get your dog trained than I suggest getting a German Shepherd.
NAHS senior Olivia Foley states, “I have had german shepherds my whole life and they are very affectionate with their owners. They are also very smart and know how to keep their owners safe.”
2. Siberian Husky

Who wouldn’t want a dog with gorgeous ocean blue eyes? Siberian huskies are known to be very loving and playful. As a bonus, they tend to be very good with families with crazy children and adults. Huskies are very relaxed and don’t bark, but they do howl. A problem with huskies is that they aren’t attack dogs. If a dangerous person/stranger comes up to them, they don’t sense the danger, therefore they won’t protect you. Another problem with huskies is they are highly active and can’t be trusted off the leash.
North resident Earl Marrow states, “I have always wanted a Siberian Husky because they are beautiful dogs and they are so chill. With them being chill, you don’t have to walk them constantly unlike other dogs.”
3. Rottweiler
Rottweilers are great dogs especially used as working dogs. Rottweilers tend to be used as work dogs because they are very knowledgeable and disciplinary. Most importantly, Rottweilers show you unconditional love and protect you at all costs. Rottweilers never take their eye off their family to make sure they are safe. A dilemma with Rottweilers is they’re a very jealous breed. They do want to always protect their owner but on the bad side they can possibly hurt innocent people. If you are someone who can’t handle your dog being stronger than you, then I suggest you don’t get a Rottweiler. If you’re someone who can handle this beast’s strength than rottweilers will be the best dog for you.
4. Great Dane
If you want a human size dog that’s very lovable, then I recommend getting a Great Dane. Great Danes are affectionate dogs that are active and great with kids. If you are not an active person, than don’t get a Great Dane because they require a lot of exercise. Great Danes are kind to every person they meet, so if you have family/friends over a lot they will be respectful to your guests.
An issue with owning great danes is that they have a bad health record. They could possibly get heart disease, bone disorders, joint disorders, etc. In my opinion, I don’t think those health scares should get in the way of your decision with getting a Great Dane because they are great dogs, especially with lots of family members.
North resident Tammy Marrow states, “I have never had a great dane before, but my family members have had danes and they are a great lovable dog. Also, great danes are so easy to take care of and just overall are great dogs.”
5. Saint Bernard
Who wouldn’t want a big, fluffy dog looking like a teddy bear? Saint Bernards are soft, loveable and a great family dog. Saint Bernards being such a great family dog, they are great protectors as well. If Saint Bernards smell danger around you, they are very quick to react. If you have crazy children that don’t know how to behave, Saint Bernards might not be the best dog for your family but, if you have well-behaved children I suggest getting a Saint Bernard. A problem with Saint Bernards is they have many health scares. Some health scares are: cancers such as osteosarcoma (bone cancer), eye problems such as entropion, ectropion, etc. Health scares shouldn’t stop you from getting a big old teddy bear that will shower you with unconditional love.
