Game Review: Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War

By Sam Foley

With the recent release of two new gaming consoles, the PS5 and Xbox Series X, many people are looking for good games to purchase and play. One of these recently released games is Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War, by Activision Games. Call of Duty, the yearly released first-person shooter has been a widely popular series for almost 15 years. So how does the most recent installment stack up to previous games and other games available on the new consoles?

Black Ops Cold War is set in the early 1980s at the height of the Cold War, a conflict between the US and the Soviet Union. This time frame is new for the series, with most games being much earlier or much farther into the future.

The game has four main modes, campaign, multiplayer, warzone, and zombies. The campaign is a single-player game mode, which has a storyline set in the Cold War. The player can create their character, who is an American CIA officer trying to stop Soviet espionage. Depending on what decisions a player makes throughout the campaign, they can achieve multiple different endings, providing replayability for this single-player mode.

Multiplayer, which is the most popular game mode in terms of the community, is an online experience with many different game modes to play. Team modes, free for all, and many more are all available on all 12 maps currently in the game There is a decent amount of content, including customization options like different guns, attachments and perks to choose from. The leveling system also provides an incentive to progress through the game. The player can level up and unlock new weapon skins, better attachments and better weapons. However, some players may find the progression system boring after a while, when they unlock all of the upgrades.

Jack Callahan, a senior from North Attleboro High School, said about multiplayer, “I really enjoy the game because you can play however you want. I can just play a few games and be relaxed and still have a good time in multiplayer.”

Warzone is another online mode that was recently introduced to the Call of Duty Series. It is a battle royale type game mode, in which 150 players fight each other on a large map and try to be the last player or team standing and win. It is similar to multiplayer in terms of customization and progression but allows for a completely different experience from multiplayer: a much larger scale, and a slower pace.

Lastly, the zombies mode is both an online or single-player survival mode. “Zombies” mode, in which players defend themselves from increasingly difficult  waves of zombies, has been in Call of Duty since some of the earliest games. This game’s zombie mode doesn’t stand out from the previous years. There is only one map currently available, with more coming in the future.

Dev Gupta, a junior from North Attleboro High School, said about the zombies mode, “I enjoyed it at first, but there is only one map and it is pretty simple so I got bored of it very quickly.” Dev continued, “I might play it more when they release new maps.”

The new Call of Duty gets a lot of things right, and is set in a new era for the series, and can also be a fun casual experience. Some aspects of the game, like the “zombies” mode, need to be improved, but as the year goes on, the game will have new downloadable content and updates which can improve the game. Overall, Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War is a good purchase if you are looking for a game to play on your new PS5 or Xbox Series X.
